Most of us recognize carbon fiber as a lightweight, durable material used in high-end applications like bikes, cars, and aeronautics. However, atop a dusty piano factory near New York City resides one of the world’s few carbon fiber pianos. Traditional pianos have often faced a tradeoff: they can be sensitive but too quiet for larger venues, or they can project sound powerfully but lose nuance. The unique Bögyani piano elegantly overcomes this challenge. With a structure akin to a traditional layered spruce soundboard, its carbon fiber design allows for a thinner, stronger build that produces rich, vibrant sounds with both power and sensitivity, expanding the expressive range for any artist.

This remarkable instrument is a prototype created for Serene, a world-class concert pianist who has taken an unconventional path to her career. Once a Google engineer and researcher, she now tours globally, despite never having attended a conservatory. Serene has collaborated on various projects, including composing for Kanye West’s opera, premiering at The Lincoln Center, performing at Art Basel, and serving as a pianist and technologist with the founder of Blue Man Group. Through her diverse musical endeavors, she focuses on merging innovative technology with music, while also expressing her unique synesthesia. Her disciplined, spiritual approach to playing has garnered her an international following.

Splice spent three days with Serene, recording the Bögyani piano using an AEA R88 stereo ribbon microphone. We explored every facet of this incredible instrument, capturing sounds from the strings, hammers, dampers, piano lid, and the keyboard itself. Serene’s performances transport listeners into a realm free from genre constraints, and the Splice production team transformed her artistry into a plethora of production-ready loops.
