Inspired by the stunning landscapes of Utah and the diverse musical influences of its creators, Cloud Splitter is a unique instrumental project, composed and performed by Charles Van Kirk, Christian Li, and Mike Bono. This collection of three sample packs is derived from their full-length album, created in the mountains of Utah and infused with memories from locations like Mount Timpanogos, Switzerland, Brazil, and Upstate New York. The project merges acoustic guitars, piano, percussion, and analog synthesizers with sounds of the natural world, creating lush, evolving compositions that are perfect for film scores, ambient albums, and modern music production.
The Story Behind the Sound
In October, the three musicians traveled to the snowy peaks outside Salt Lake City, Utah, where they were inspired by the landscape and the memories of past travels. Capturing outdoor field recordings throughout the region, they integrated sounds from the natural world into their music, blending acoustic elements with synthesizers and drum machines. The music reflects personal memories of specific mountains, and these compositions were crafted with the intention of creating music ripe for sample packs.
The trio’s approach combines influences ranging from Bach to Zimbabwean mbira music to Radiohead, all creating a hybrid production style filled with hypnotic minimalist grooves and slowly evolving harmonies. The result is a set of soundscapes and loops, rich in both organic and electronic textures, that can elevate any production.
